Whatever your needs, we're here to help you take the first step with confidence.

What does Sonder mean?

Sonder is the realisation that every person has a life as vivid and complex as our own.

Each person has their own story — shaped by memories, routines, relationships, worries, humour, hopes, challenges and moments we may never fully see.

At Sonder Home Care, this idea sits at the heart of how we care. We don’t see people as a list of needs, visits or tasks. We see the whole person: their past, their preferences, their family, their home, their independence and the life they are still very much living.

It reminds us that every act of care becomes part of someone’s wider story. A familiar face at the door, a conversation over tea, help getting ready for the day, or support to stay connected to the world outside — these moments matter.

That is why our care begins with understanding the person first.

The word “sonder” was coined by John Koenig in The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.

CQC ‘Outstanding Home Care

This recognition reflects the quality, care and attention to detail shown across our service — from our dedicated team of carers to our personalised approach and strong sense of community.

We understand that each person’s needs are unique, which is why our care is tailored to individual preferences, routines and requirements. Alongside our care at home, our weekly events — including dementia-friendly cinema trips, friendship cafés and coffee mornings — help create moments of connection, companionship and engagement.

For us, Outstanding care is not just about meeting needs. It is about helping each client feel valued, supported and part of the wider Sonder community.

You can learn more about what makes Sonder different on our Why Choose Us page.

Sonder Home Care is proud to be within the top 4% of providers with a CQC Outstanding rating.

At Sonder, we take pride in the values that shape our approach to care.

Ours is a vocation, not simply a service.

Caring for someone vulnerable is a responsibility that cannot be taken half-heartedly. It demands both physical and emotional energy and an absolute commitment. To the best carers, it feels like a calling, not a job.

We are part of a team.

We work as part of the sensitive relationship between the person we are caring for, their family and health professionals. We want what’s best for everyone and we work with a spirit of collaboration, keeping the channels of communication active.

We help maintain the dignity of those we care for.

Our clients usually want to maintain their sense of independence for as long as possible. With our help, they can feel reassured and proud that they can continue to lead a normal life in the familiar surroundings of their home.

We hire people that we want to spend time with.

Our team spends hours, every day, with their clients. So they have to be good company. And, to build trust and familiarity, they need to be genuinely personable, willing to show a sense of humour to lighten the load on those days that feel challenging.

We instinctively do the little things that mean a lot.

The little treats and trips out. Knowing what makes a client smile. Sensing when something just isn’t feeling right. They may not be world-changing moments but they can make someone’s day.

We always look for ways to be better carers.

By being responsible and willing to adapt at any given moment, we leave the door open to spot room for improvement. Every day brings different challenges and also different opportunities to make our clients even more content and comfortable.

We want to talk to the young about growing old.

Although the responsibilities of caring for elderly relatives are usually shouldered by mature adults, we see the positive benefits of discussing the topic with the younger generation. So we take every opportunity to visit schools and community centres.

Our Story

Sonder Home Care was founded in 2007 with a mission and deep passion to deliver outstanding care in the home. Our journey began with the understanding that every individual deserves to age with dignity, surrounded by the comforts and memories that only home can provide.

Starting in Elmbridge and Spelthorne, we recognised the growing need for compassionate, personalised care services in the local community. From our humble beginnings with just a handful of carers, we have expanded to offer a wide range of services, including companionship, personal care, dementia care, and live-in care, among others. Our growth has been driven by the increasing trust and support of families who value the difference our tailored care makes.

What began as a small, dedicated team has grown into a large network of compassionate professionals, each committed to delivering the highest quality of care. Whether it's helping clients maintain their independence or providing specialist care for complex needs, we’ve remained true to our mission.

As we continue to grow, our commitment remains the same: to keep people living happily and safely in the place they love most—their own home.
